Sony portable radio - great value
As an Electrical Engineer working in the Audio Engineering field, I am very cautious with my audio/video purchases since I have purchased, returned, and tossed so many radio/TV pieces of junk due to crap performance or lousy user interface. I can fully state this Sony is a great product for the price with only a $100 Sangean, $200 CCradio, or $300 Grundigs as other options.
POSITIVES
- Digital tuner quite good with A- grade sensitivity (ability to pick up weak signals) and B+ selectivity (ability to block channels on either side of chosen station).
- Tonal quality B- on AM but B+ on FM. I think they have pulled down the highs to suppress typical AM radio noises.
- Big tuning knobs and obvious volume dials easy to reach and fast tune.
- Ability to instantly switch to weather is great.
- Preset setup using "press-and-hold" to store very intuitive
- Battery usage is good with about 1hr/day usage for 6 weeks on 3-AA's. Auto-off feature very good to save batteries.
- External power supply input and headphone jack very nice but not used by me.
NEGATIVES (all minor)
- Big display but no back-light. Simple oversight a shame considering radio performance.
- No tilting back-flap as with older Sony table radios. Tilting the radio back slightly helps on high frequencies considerably.
- The beige color is OK and does not show smuges but Sony used to sell this same model at Target in white which looked nicer.
SUMMARY
Outstanding product for the price with real value $50-$60. I have purchased 4 of them over the last year.
Great radio!
I bought this Sony portable radio to replace another SONY portable that I owned and loved using for over 20 years I did not think I would find a new portable that I would like as well. But I have! This model is not too large and has a nice appearance and easy to use preset button features. But most of all, it has great sound quality with no drift on my favorite stations. Great sound was the key feature I wanted in a radio, and this little Sony does not disappoint.
No Power cord !!!!
I overlooked the review which said this radio comes without a power adaptor. I think the quality okay but fairly cheap. Audio quality okay
but prett "Tinney". Its a cheap radio With NO POWER CORD I guess
Somewhat disapointed
I overlooked the review which said this radio comes without a power adaptor. Also, having owned Sony portable radios in the past, I think the quality has dropped. While the audio quality is acceptable, it is not as good as expected from other reviews, and at louder than averagevolume, the sound distorts quite a bit more than expected. I packed it up and put it aside for future use in emergencies.
great radio but incomplete
After quite a search, this was the only radio that met our requirements of 1)
station select buttons 2) headphone jack and 3)AC/DC. But.....it didn't come
with the AC jack and that jack was quite hard to find. When we finally found it and ordered it, it came with the warning to not use it with a radio! It seems to work so we kept it, so hopefully it will be fine, but the process was frustrating. The radio works great though.
