Good multiregion playback for the price; but fails on a few DVDs
I have been using this player for about 2 years now to watch region 2 DVDs bought from Amazon in Europe. The magic code sequence with the remote worked fine for me for enabling DVDs from any region. Most of the time, these DVDs played fine. So, for the price, you cannot complain: multiregion for about $30 is great. On the other hand, every so often I would purchase a DVD and not be able to understand the dialog and, on these DVDs, I noticed that the video image jumped every few frames. This behavior happened for me on about 1 in 10 or 1 in 20 DVDs.
Recently I purchased a slightly more expensive player, the Philips DVP5140, that can also be enabled for multiregion playback, and uses a higher sampling rate when converting the PAL image to an NTSC image. And that player has no problem whatsoever with the dozen or so DVDs that gave the CyberHome trouble. So, if you can afford it, I would recommend the Philips DVP5140, for about $60, over the CyberHome.
Quality control
Obviously, judging by the other reviews, the quality control on this product leaves a lot to be desired. It seems to either work very well or very poorly. Mine is one of the latter. Have only used it a few hours but it will not track a DVD beyond about an hour. In other words, the outer portion of the disc. Tried using a Memorex laser cleaning disc, but this did not help. Mine is a piece of junk, as far as I am concerned. Don't waste your money on this lottery.
No bad if you are okay piling up landfills!
Okay, so we are in the age of "disposable" everything, including cheap DVD players. This one I bought a little less than a year ago and it just died on my two weeks ago (however, after many a movies from Netflix). Not too bad for 11 months use I guess, considering the price, but still, the landfill must be full of them. Do yourself a favor; pay a little more and hold on to it longer. Our waste disposal men thank you!
cheap!
I bought this DVD player in August and was happy with it until it broke down completely in November! You certainly get what you pay for. I got maybe 20 hours of use from it. This is false economy. Pay a bit more and get something that last longer than 3-4 months.
Ginormous Waste of Money
I have purchased three of these dvd players in the past 2 1/2 years, every one of them has had the same problems. Trouble reading dvds, dvds skipping, discs freezing and the manual buttons stopped working on two of the units. The price is right on the unit, but not for the time it worked. I would have been better off spending double or triple the unit price to get one that worked for more than 6 months without a problem. If I could give it less than 1 star I would because thats really what it is worth, nothing.
