Don't get this if you can't put the antennae outside
I bought the Boombox to take back and forth from work to home specifically to hear Howard Stern. It works in the front half of my house IF I put the antennae outside (but not at all in the back half). It doesn't work AT ALL at work. After speaking to 5 different tech support people at Sirius, I finally got the answer that I will not be able to get reception PERIOD without putting the antennae outside. Great! When it works at home I really like it but I feel like I wasted the $100 on it since it doesn't work the way I want it to. Had I known I would need to put the antennae outside, I would've gotten a different system. Sirius itself is awesome, all the stations are great and the car kit that came with the Sporster is perfect. This produce, however, sucks.
Decent boombox-poor reception
I bought the boombox to put on my desk at work. As far as the unit itself goes, it sounds and looks pretty good. There is a very obvious lack of a volume display, causing me to scare some coworkers and about deafen myself when hitting the source button. It's impossible to rate an item like this without also rating the Sirius service. Unfortunately, this is where the biggest problems are. I'm in a downtown area on the 20th floor next to a window facing West. According to the manual, this is the optimum location for an antenna. There are no buildings taller than 8 stories between me and the visible horizon, but I'm still not able to pick up the satellite signal. If I place the antenna in my cube, I can pick up the ground repeater, but only in one apparentley magic spot in my cube. Unfortunately, the magic spot seems to change from day to day and throughout the day. This results in a frustrating dance with the antenna to find reception. I would highly recommend borrowing someone else's unit to see if you can get reception before making the considerable investment in this new technology. My home kit and car kit reception are fine.
what a terrable sound system
this thing straight up sucks, i got it for christmas as one of my gifts and guess what i dont have sirius reception in my house ,and they want you to put the antenna near the window, what kinda of boom box do you have that has to sit next to a window or it wont work, needless to say this didn't work for me, so unless you live on top of a mountain dont buy this crap it is a piece and should not be sold
Not Loud Enough
OK boom box. I agree with other reviews - not loud enough! However, a solution to the low volume problem when using your satellite reciever is to place another (ie louder) boom box near it. The wireless fm signal from the Sportster tuner will transmit to the next box. I have not used it with batteries yet, nor the aux input.
Good Unit as a Whole but Could Be Better!
I have to say that this product has more of an upside than a downside. Since I've gotten satellite radio I don't even listen to conventional radio anymore so this portable unit was a no brainer for me to get. It will go everywhere with me whether it's to the beach, camping or to the big game. It's portability can't be beat! It's reception is quite good, even in the house and sometimes better than in my car. The fact that it doesn't have an am/fm tuner doesn't bother me because that's not why I bought it. There are a few downsides however. The fact that this thing takes eight D batteries can make it very expensive to use when you take it out of the house, therefore buying rechargeable batteries is a must. At least it can be plugged in either at home or if your car/truck has a hook-up. Also, for something called a boombox it should be a little louder with a little more bass. The volume level is fine in the house but outside, where it's going to be used most of the time the sound may get drowned out in noisy enviroments. Also there are no independent bass or treble buttons to adjust, it's built in. Having said that it's a boombox that doesn't really boom. All things considered though I would buy it again because it is going to get used over and over again. Overall it's a good unit and a great idea!
