What Others Say

Excellent magazine
What a shame this magazine isn't as well known and widely distributed as Essence or Ebony. Though the aforementioned magazines hold a prominent and respected place in the black magazine industry, the aptly-titled "American Legacy" showcases the rich, varied history of black Americans which often, is shunted to side due to obscure scholarship or its regional nature. All libraries and stores need to carry this magazine.

the right kind of pride
AMERICAN LEGACY is subtitled 'The magazine of African-American history and culture', a perfect tag line for a high-quality magazine that does not so much celebrate a shade of skin color as it does the achievement of African Americans throughout the course of American history.

There is no shortage of material for such elevation of the best qualities of black Americans. The recent 'special music issue' in front of me surveys formative black influence on many musical genres, from opera to jazz. The cover story on Sammy Davis, Jr. is especially insightful. A confident editorial voice can show one of black America's leading entertainers without hiding his warts, surely a sign of maturity in a periodical like this one.

THE BEST!
This is my Number 1 favorite magazine...even the advertising sections are informative! Articles are diverse and engaging, in-depth and highly readable; in Fall 2005 alone they covered "The Highwaymen" (a group of self-taught Florida artists who created lush landscapes and sold them along the roadside), James Reese Europe, The Dance Theatre of Harlem, Charlotte Hawkins/Palmer Memorial Institute, the soldiers who build the Alaska Highway, "Top Ten Influential Books & Films in Black History"...among other things. I'm particularly delighted to see women equally represented in each issue. They're celebrating their 10th year in 2005, and planning to expand to 6 issues annually.

One Of The Best Magazines Ever!
I'd highly recommend 'American Legacy' to everyone. Once you receive the first issue, you'll never want to be without it.

Inspired
A great source of information about African American past and present. It is magazine that the whole family can enjoy.
