Easy to use, good sound quality
I purchased XtremeMac IPV-MIC-00 MicroMemo Digital Voice Recorder for iPod Video (Black) to use in my music classroom, both to record my entire class singing together and to record individual students one at a time. It works very well for this purpose. It is extremely easy to operate.
I originally tried the recorder out with my personal 5th gen iPod classic and there was a loud hiss on that recording. When I took it to school and tried it with my 6th gen school-owned iPod the hiss was gone and I was very pleased (there is some background noise but not more than I think is reasonable for a compact recorder at this price.)
I was happy with this purchase and find this item to be very well-suited for my purposes.
DON'T BUY IT
I'm a freelance videographer, i was looking for a Digital Voice Recorder that i could use while shooting weddings. My original plan was to place a recorder at the podioum to capture the audio of the readers during the ceremony, after doing a couple of tests on actual events (as a second unit of course) I found out a couple of BIG flaws.
1) there's a terrible "hizz" on the entire audio file, and that's on both setting high and low.
2) every 20 or 30 seconds i get a drop out on audio (like 6-8 frames) witch is less than a second long but still very anoying
3) when the music starts playing the audio starts clipping (the signal gets to loud to be recorder and starts to saturate)

good recordings, battery hog
I am a student pastor, and I use this device to record my thoughts in preparation for a sermon. I have also used it to record sermon rehearsals (approx. 15-20 minutes). In these cases it works very well, but after about one hour my iPod battery is very low. Unfortunately, I couldn't imagine using this to record a lecture longer than about 60 minutes.
I have the 8GB iPod Classic. To convert the files from WAV to MP3 I use a free downloaded program called Switch (by NCH Swift Sound). It is very easy to use - simply drag the voice memo file from "My Music" in iTunes to Switch, and Switch saves as an MP3 in any folder you designate.
Again, this is a great product, except for its drain on the battery.
Optimism quashed
I bought this device hoping to use my new 5th gen ipod video as a digital recorder for class lectures but felt it did not meet my expectations. The Apple genius person told me, after making "voice memos" that were not able to be transferred to the computer and were part dead air, that memos could not be recorded longer than 20 minutes or the file would start to corrupt. So I began to stop the recordings at or before 20 minutes and I still had problems with about 30% of the files being partly corrupted and most unable to be transferred to my computer. My second trip to the genius bar was met with rebuff and advice to buy a real digital recorder and just use my iPod for music. I try to be a good apple customer....but its so hard sometimes.... ...
