Features: Method of choice of Premier Hospitals Use on sleeping infant, or child with ear infection Recommended for the whole family No probe covers required More accurate than ear - Harvard Medical School study. At least as accurate as rectal - Hospital for Sick Children study. Protected by 11 US patents, made in USA 9V Battery included. Recommended by physicians. Directions: Remove protective cap before use. Be sure lens is clean. If not, clean with cotton swab dipped in alcohol and let dry. Hold the thermometer as shown. Gently position the probe flush (flat) on the center of the forehead, midway between the eyebrow and the hairline. Press and hold the SCAN button. Lightly slide the thermometer across the forehead keeping the sensor flat and in contact with the skin until you reach the hairline. You will hear a beeping and a red light will blink to indicate a measurement is taking place. If perspiration is present, continue to hold button depressed, lift probe from forehead and touch the neck just behind the ear lobe. Release the SCAN button and remove the thermometer from the head. Read the temperature on the display. Thermometer will shut off automatically after 30 seconds. To turn the thermometer off immediately, press and release the button quickly. Replace the protective cap on thermometer to protect the sensor when not in use.

What Others Say

Love this thermometer!
I recently had my first baby and bought three thermometers (rectal, ear, and this temporal one) in a search for one that was easy to use and gave an accurate temperature reading. I LOVE the Exergen temporal thermometer! It is super easy to use - you just run it across the baby's forehead - so much easier than the other two types. It gives consistent readings and seems accurate (based on comparisons with other thermometers in the house tested on me and my husband).

I absolutely would recommend this thermometer to everyone - especially new parents who are looking for a easy way to take a temp!

The best gift for new parents
I was really hesitant to take my newborn's temperature rectally. We had gotten the in-the-ear thermometer as a gift but were told by our pediatrician that you can't use this on newborns. My husband found this and I have to say it was the best investment we ever made--it's very accurate and totally non-invasive. The best part is that you can take your child's temperature while they are sleeping. I would totally recommend this as a gift for parents of newborns.

Great Thermometer
I just purchased the Exergen Temporal thermometer today from Walmart. My son had not been feeling well and I had finally had it with my Braun tympanic (ear) thermometer. I never felt like I could get an accurate reading. I am an RN, and we have been using the Exergen Temporal thermometer (professional model) for years.
When used correctly, it really does give an accurate reading. Using this model does take a bit of practice, but after a few tries you should get the hang of it. What I love about it is that you can take a temp. when your child is sleeping.
As other reviewers have noted, you press the button after the thermometer is touching the forehead and you let go of the button BEFORE you take it off. By the way, at work ... Read More

Great.
I bought this thermometer because I don't want to take a temp on my daughter rectally every time I think she might have a temperature. Our pediatrician wants a rectal temp to be seen for a sick appointment, so I can at least get an idea of if I need to go through that hassle. I do agree with the reviewer who said that its a bit difficult to know if the unit is placed flat on the forehead. I don't think that it is that hard though. We'll take this to out next appointment to see just how accurate it is.

Not consistent = useless!
I bought the Exergen based on the rave reviews here. I'll give the manufacturer the benefit of the doubt here and suggest that maybe I got a bum unit, but I doubt it. It seemed to function OK, but it didn't even begin to live up to my expectations.

I read the instructions carefully, and even looked up other tips as to how to use it properly on the web. The best readings I got were when I placed it on the forehead over one eye, dragged it slowly over to above the other eye, continuing over and down to the temple, then straight down the side of the face, stopping in front of the ear, with the whole process taking maybe 5 seconds. Whatever you do, don't press the button until the unit is in full skin contact, and you should release ... Read More
